YOUNG MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS FORUM (YMLSF) NATIONAL REJECTS AFFILIATE BMLS PROGRAMME IN FCVMLT
Open Letter to Dr. Chukwu O.Chukwu
Provost/CEO, FCVMLT
Federal College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Technology
Vom, Plateau State
Dear Dr. Chukwu,
RE: Purported Launch of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) Programme at FCVMLT–A Dangerous Precedent Against the Profession.
We write to you in utmost concern and firm objection to the widely circulated announcement that the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) programme has been launched in your institution, FCVMLT.
It is not only alarming but deeply regrettable that your college, under your leadership, is allegedly taking steps to run an affiliated BMLS programme, despite the unequivocal position of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) as stated in its Circular 2 of 2025 dated January 17, 2025
In that circular, the management of MLSCN clearly states that:
"MLSCN has not approved any and does not intend to recognize affiliated BMLS programme, hence students in the affiliated BMLS programe (if any) will not be accepted for indexing, or professional examinations, and neither will they be accepted for induction and licensure to practice the Medical Laboratory Science professionn Nigeria.”
This is not an ambiguous suggestion. It is a regulatory directive that must be respected if we are to safeguard the integrity, quality, and global standard of our noble profession.
It is disheartening to note that, in pursuit of institutional glory, FCVMLT is now toying with the professional destinies of young Nigerians and undermining the decades of regulatory progress that MLSCN has fought hard to protect. Such an action risks flooding the system with unindexable, unlicensed, and unemployable graduates, thus reducing the profession to a mockery.
Dr. Chukwu, with all due respect, this move-however well-intentioned is illegal, unethical, and professionally harmful. The propagation of such a progranmme at this point is not only a disservice to your students and staff, but an affront to MLSCN's regulatory mandate and the collective interest of the medical laboratory science profession in Nigeria.
Therefore, we respectfully but firmly demand the following:
1. Immediate cessation of any purported BMLS programme in FCVMLT that is not fully and independently approved by MLSCN.
2. Apublic clarification and press release disassociating FCVMLT from any non-recognized or affiliated BMLS initiative.
3. A call for alignment with MLSCN's directives and regulatory expectations.
It is no longer business as usual. We are ready, as passionate and well-meaning stakeholders, to name and shame institutions and individuals attempting to exploit regulatory gaps for personal or institutional gain. The profession must not be hijacked by selfish interests or emotional praise-singing.
While we appreciate the infrastructural and morale-boosting contributions you have made to your college, this single action, if not swiftly addressed, will overshadow all of that. True leadership is not only measured by praise or gestures, but by the ability to make the hard, lawful, and right decisions in the face of public pressure.
We await your immediate clarification and hope to see proactive steps taken to align your leadership with the regulatory demands of our profession. Thank you, sir and kind regards,
